Are you a Young Carer?

A young Carer is a child or young person under the age of 18 carrying out significant caring tasks and assuming a level of responsibility for another person which would normally be taken by an adult

Young Adult Carers are young people whose caring role has started or developed up to the age of 25.

Reasons are varied but can include:

  • Serious physical illness
  • Long term physical disability
  • Neurological conditions
  • Mental Health problems
  • Dementia
  • Addiction
  • Learning difficulties

Day to day responsibilities often include:

  • Cooking
  • Cleaning
  • Shopping
  • Providing nursing and personal care
  • Giving emotional support

How we can help young carers

If you need to talk to someone in confidence about being a young carer or any issues you have then you can talk to one of the Safeguarding & Welfare Officers in the Student Wellbeing Centre.

You will be supported through your time at college in various ways, in order to help you we need to be aware of your caring responsibilities, please complete the questionnaire.

From this we can contact you and make any reasonable adjustments you need to support you to achieve at college and make your time here an enjoyable one.
 

The Junction

The Student Wellbeing Centre work alongside The Junction, they offer support for young carers and their families. 

If you are interested or just want some information then they are available to offer free, impartial advice. Please pop into the Wellbeing Centre and we will be happy to help.
 

Meet the Team

The Young Carers Team are responsible for supporting students who are carers. This includes emotional support, communication with tutors to ensure extra support is provided round attendance and deadlines, and referring in to local support groups where necessary.
