Counselling & Student Wellbeing

We understand our students may be going through difficulties in their lives, which could impact their studies.

Student talking to counsellor

Counselling is available to all students, full and part time, and is free and confidential.

Sometimes it can be easier to talk to a stranger than to family or friends, which is why we have a dedicated counselling service to ensure the overall health and wellbeing of those enrolled at the college. During talking therapy, a trained counsellor or therapist is there to listen and help, giving the chance for those to talk, cry, shout or just think. It’s an opportunity to look at any problems in a different way, with our student counselling team ensuring the most appropriate support is provided.

Students can seek support from the service for a range of issues, including relationship problems, anger management, domestic abuse and low self esteem. We can also offer help with more college related struggles, such as studying, stress and dissatisfaction.

What will happen when I access the Middlesbrough College counselling service?

Initially students will be required to complete a short referral online to allow us to gain an understanding of what difficulties they are experiencing. By assessing individual needs, we can then ensure we provide the correct support.

The counselling service can also provide links to local external advice and information services for issues including sexual health and teen pregnancy, drugs, alcohol and sexuality.

Counselling is confidential unless consent is given to share information, or unless a risk of severe harm to a person is disclosed. This is explained in more detail in the initial sessions and adheres to the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) Code of Ethics.
