We caught up with Freya Hollinshead, who is currently studying her second year of the T Level in Health Level 3 course at Middlesbrough College. Freya received fantastic praise from her work placement employers, who described her as hard-working, reliable, friendly, and appreciative throughout her placement.

“I was originally at another college in Darlington studying A Levels but struggled with the exams. When I saw the facilities that Middlesbrough College had to offer, I decided to enrol onto the BTEC Level 3 in Health and Social Care course. However, Alfie Scott suggested that I might enjoy the T Level in Health course more.

“Through the course, I began a work placement at South Tees Hospital within the Central Delivery Maternity Centre. At first, I was nervous, but the team took me under their wing. I have observed various births, including C-sections and natural births, and have helped with checking the baby after delivery. I now have a Health Care Assistant bank role, meaning that when they need extra support, I will go in and help.

“I learn better through practical sessions and hands-on experience. The health ward facilities have been great, especially the maternity suite where there is a mannequin to practice delivering babies. Within the course, we’ve learned about person-centred care, safeguarding, and how to treat people with varying needs; this has greatly helped with my work placement, and we utilised these skills in our practical sessions at college.

“During the course, we have fundraised for South Tees Hospital, raising over £2,000! I have also taken part in Careers Days about various pathways in healthcare and was awarded Health and Social Care Student of the Year at the Student Awards in 2024, which was a great achievement.

“My goal is to become a midwife; I love the thought of bringing new life into someone’s world and being part of a special, emotional moment. I plan to go to university after I’ve completed my course but want to gain more experience within the sector first.

“I would definitely recommend studying the T Level in Health course; the tutors are really supportive and provide a hands-on learning experience.

“Outside of college, I also work at the Darlington Hippodrome, working on the bar and doors on show nights. I love it when the Christmas Pantomime is on, as there are so many happy children excited to see the show!”
