Courses to get you back into work

Our Sector Based Work Academies are short courses designed to get you back into work in a specific occupation. They include industry-recognised qualifications alongside a guaranteed job interview or exceptional support for the application process, with a local employer upon completion! Within all of our courses, you will gain skills in application search, CV writing and interview preparation. 

Courses run on regular dates throughout the year and attending them will not affect your benefits.

Inc. CSCS/Manual Handling

Level 1

Eligibility and Funding for course:
This course is eligible for people aged 19+ (as of 21st August 2023) and have Entry Level 3.5 English, and Employed and earning less that £31,210 per annum. 

Level 1
Duration - 3 Weeks
Dates - Various Dates/Flexible Times
Cost - Free*
Delivery method - Classroom 

Our 3 week course offers experience of the following skills, in a practical, hands on environment:

  • Developing Bricklaying Skills
  • Using painting skills for interior ceilings and walls
  • Introduction to plastering techniques
  • Floor and wall tiling techniques
  • Health & Safety and CSCS Card Training
  • CV writing techniques and job interview skills
Eligibility and Funding for course:
This course is eligible for people aged 19+ (as of 31st August 2023) and have Entry Level 3 English, and Employed and earning less that £31,210 per annum. 

Photo ID is required to sit the CSCS Card exam. Learners must also complete an initial English & Maths assessment prior to enrolment.

Inc. First Aid & DBS

Our Level 1 Health & Care course offers training and support to help you to find work in the Health & Care sector. Plus, Level 1 Introduction to Catering, and Level 2 Food Safety.

You can also gain an additional Level 2 qualification in Principles of Dementia Care. You will receive full support in applying for current vacancies, updating your CV and preparing for job interview, as well as help with the cost of a DBS check.

Inc. Door Supervisor or CCTV

Level 2

Middlesbrough College is working with one of the UK’s leading security firms, Close Protection Security Ltd, to train and recruit for a number of exciting security vacancies. We are providing a FREE* training programme, developed in partnership with Close Protection Security, where you will learn essential skills for working in the Security industry.

On our 3-week course covers everything from legal aspects of working in security, to the latest physical intervention techniques, and you will gain an accredited SIA Licence (Level 2 Door Supervisor).

You’ll also achieve a Level 1 Occupational Studies and Level 1 Employment Training & Personal Development (including a unit on Drug Awareness).

On successful completion of training, we will fund your SIA badge. Plus, you'll receive full support to update your CV, and prepare for interview.

Inc. Fork Lift Truck

Level 1

Duration - 4 Weeks
Dates - Various Dates/Flexible Times
Cost - Free*
Delivery method - Classroom 

On our free 4-week course you will achieve a Level 1 NVQ Diploma in Performing Manufacturing Operations and Level 1 Warehousing & Storage.

You can also gain a Level 2 Award in Land Based Fork Lift Truck Operations (Counterbalance, Scissor Lift & Cherry Picker). The course will cover training in Manual Handling, Health & Safety and First Aid in the Workplace.

We will fund your FLT Licence. You will also receive full support in applying for current vacancies, updating your CV and preparing for job interview.
