T Level – Maintenance Installation and Repair for Engineering and Manufacturing (Light and Electric Vehicles) – Level 3

You will develop the theoretical and practical knowledge, skills and behaviours required to be a successful modern-day automotive technician.

Modules Studied Core:

• How vehicle service and repair is impacted by legislative, regulatory and ethical requirements, including health and safety law and environmental procedures
• The structure of the industry and how the business works from an operational perspective, business targets, the systems and processes that make up the efficient running of a business
• How to develop positive working relationships and communicate effectively and how to carry out self-evaluation and improve own performance
• The procedures for the maintenance of tools and the workshop
• Routine servicing and inspection procedures
• Steering and suspension geometries; electrical circuit requirements and calculations
• Construction and operation of vehicle components and systems
• Common fault types, causes and effects of different types of faults
• The implications and legal requirements of fitting accessories and carrying out vehicle modifications
• How to diagnose faults using suitable fault-finding strategies
• Construction and operation of advanced electrical, braking and suspension systems, engine and transmission systems and engine and gear calculations
• Vehicle emissions and legal requirements
• Alternative fuels and hybrid and electric systems.

September – June

You must have achieved five GCSEs at grade 5 (C) and above including maths, English language and science.

To achieve the Level 3 City and Guilds, T Level Technical Qualification in Maintenance, Installation and Repair for Engineering and Manufacturing – Automotive specialist pathway, learners must complete the two components of the Technical qualification. These are known as the core component and the Occupational Specialism: Year 1 Engineering Common Core and Year 2 Light and Electric Vehicles

Learners must complete:

• Two externally set exams covering knowledge from the engineering common core
• The exams provide sufficient sampling of the content and consist of a mixture of short answer questions (SAQs), some of which will be structured, and extended response questions (ERQs).
• One Employer-set project covering knowledge and core skills from the engineering common core (component 300).
• The employer-set project will consist of a well-defined, real industry-style brief. The brief will be complex and non-routine, and will require the use of relevant maths, English and digital skills. The brief will provide a valid context for the Level 3 learner to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the core content and their core skills to solve occupationally relevant situations and/or problems.
• An Automotive Occupational Specialist :These assessments will feature a considerable practical element and are composed of a series of holistic practical tasks relating to the specialism at hand. They will take place within an approximate three-month assessment window.

Achievement of the course is also dependent on learners also completing the minimum requirement of 45 days of a relevant work placement.

This Technical Qualification is intended for you if you want to progress your career in the motor vehicle industry – job roles could include:

• Motor Vehicle Technician
• Automotive Engineer

All Health & Safety PPE will be provided. It is advisable to have access to a digital device to access online learning materials and College software and apps, please ask for details of any arrangements available on enrolment form the College.

Tuition fees are free if you are a UK or home-fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course.

Every T Level student will take an industry placement, which will last a minimum of 315 hours (approximately 45 days) but can last longer. The placement will help you gain valuable experience in the workplace and allow employers to meet the new talent in their industry. This will include an employer focus on developing practical and technical skills required for the occupation.
